A4 Daimon Chopsticks by A4 Japan (大門箸)

Handcrafted in Nara, Japan

A contemporary evolution of Nara’s chopstick heritage

Born in Shimoichi-cho, Nara Prefecture, a historic town renowned for chopstick craftsmanship, the Daimon Chopsticks represent a modern reinterpretation of a Japanese classic. The region is celebrated for its high-quality Yoshino wood, and remains the primary producer of Japan’s domestically made Rikyu chopsticks—a traditional disposable design conceived by tea master Sen no Rikyu to honour guests.

Rikyu chopsticks are characterised by their symmetrical form, with a thicker centre and tapered ends. The Daimon Chopsticks build upon this legacy, carefully evolving the form to meet contemporary standards of usability, elegance, and material refinement.

Thoughtful form, refined balance

Chopsticks are, by nature, supporting actors at the table—tools designed to elevate food rather than draw attention to themselves. With this philosophy in mind, the Daimon Chopsticks were designed with exceptionally slender tips, allowing for precise, delicate handling of food.

After months of prototyping, the designers arrived at a subtle yet deliberate innovation: an asymmetrical profile, with one side slightly thicker than the other. This considered imbalance enhances grip, improves control, and allows hand movements to feel more natural and visually graceful during use.

While traditional Rikyu chopsticks are typically made from cedar, the Daimon Chopsticks are crafted from Yoshino Hinoki (Japanese cypress). Prized for its straight grain, gentle strength, and resilience, Hinoki is ideally suited to this ultra-fine form. The tips are finished with a sharp blade, refining the grain and creating a smooth, tactile surface. After nearly two years of meticulous development, the final shape was achieved.

Exceptional Japanese craftsmanship

Despite their minimal appearance, the Daimon Chopsticks require an unusually high level of manual craftsmanship. Natural wood varies significantly, with warping, knots, and colour variation, making automation impossible. Each stage—timber selection, cutting, shaping, air-drying, and inspection—is carried out with care by skilled hands.

Some pieces are rested in sunlight and fresh air to enhance stability and quality, and every pair is visually checked before release. The result is a disposable chopstick of exceptional refinement—crafted to exceed expectations in both performance and finish.

Designed to last, responsibly disposable

Although rooted in the tradition of disposable Rikyu chopsticks—an eco-conscious practice that uses offcuts from forestry thinning—the Daimon Chopsticks are intentionally designed to endure. Strong, well-balanced, and finely finished, they can be washed, dried, and reused multiple times without compromise.

Beyond the table, they retain value even at the end of their life. They may be repurposed as kindling for outdoor fires or stoves, or replaced seasonally while the old pair finds new use as fuel. In this way, the Daimon Chopsticks offer a thoughtful lifecycle—respected as both a refined dining tool and a natural material returned to use.
